Pop Pop

Yesterday I got a call from Pop Pop, my dad's dad.

I struck gold in the grandparent department and he is a sizable chunk of that precious metal.  He's as good a man as they come and I'm not just saying that because he's my grandpa.  You'd only have to stand in line behind him at the grocery store to know it's true.

But Pop Pop hasn't been spending much time in the grocery store lately.  Instead he has been a patient in Ohio's finest hospital, trying to manage his congestive heart failure.

He has a big, kind, generous heart, but it is also old and tired and there is nothing more to be done.  Soon he will return home to spend his remaining days in the company of his wife of 60 years.

When I spoke with him yesterday he sounded tired, but peaceful.  His grace and unwavering faith are contagious; yesterday's sadness has turned into today's comfort and peace.

The uncertainties may be difficult, but they are tender reminders to trust.  To have faith.

And so we will.

  1. Such a difficult part of life is watching our grandparents age. It's never fun to have the uncertainties and questions of the inevitable.

    Virtual hugs your way!
